But Sane is amazingly back training and could even START in Basel tonight.

Boss Guardiola said: “I’m surprised. He’s not in perfect condition but he has won a lot of times with us and wants to help us.

“He’s had just one training session — but he’s young. Sane’s now with us in Switzerland and that’s good news.”

And Guardiola warns his side their stunning form up to now will count for nothing against their Euro rivals.

He said: “We have done better for seven or eight months than last season.

“But this competition is so special from my experience — the teams are so clinical and you have to be, too.”

The injury to Sane was one of the reasons why City have written to referees’ chief Mike Riley calling for a change in the rules.

Their cause was boosted last night as Uefa called on refs to provide more protection for players.

Uefa’s referee chief Pierluigi Collina said: “We do not want situations where a player’s future is put in doubt because of serious injury caused by a challenge.”
